GMAT and GRE have a different difficulty level. Many find the Quant section of the GMAT to be more difficult. The verbal section of GRE is vocabulary intensive as compared to the meaning and grammar intensive Verbal section of GMAT.
Most B-Schools accept both GMAT & GRE and have different average scores/scales to which they measure a candidate's performance in either of the tests. However, they might have certain nuances which you could consider while deciding
If you’re unsure of your future course of study, and want to keep your options open, GRE might be a better choice. If you’re sure of Business School, focus on GMAT as it is quantitatively heavy and a better predictor of success in B-school
Know about your target school preferences and check the average test scores for both schools
Understand if your target schools accept the online versions of the tests or not before signing up for it.
Both the tests have a validity of 5 years, and it is advisable to get done with it sooner rather than later so that you can focus on other aspects of your application.
Remember that the goal is to get a good score!! You could start off by taking a Diagnostic mock on the official sites for both of the tests and see where you score better.
